All about electrification

Electrification is a process that cannot be ignored. But what is it exactly, and what advantages does it have for your company? We tell you everything you need to know about electrification and help you on your way to a clean and efficient future!

Electrification: meaning

Electrification means the transition from fossil fuels to electricity. This process is currently in full swing in industry, but also in vehicles and construction machinery. The main purpose of electrification is to reduce CO2 emissions. But there are other advantages too: electrically powered machines are generally more efficient, quieter, and cheaper to maintain. By electrifying your machines, you also have fewer emission restrictions and demonstrate your corporate social responsibility.

Electrification in the Netherlands

The Netherlands has ambitious goals when it comes to electrification. It is working towards a climate-neutral industry in 2050, for example. In the shorter term too, up to 2030, major steps must be taken. The targets are set out in the electrification roadmap (more on this in the next paragraph). But the Netherlands is not only making efforts to electrify industry; transport and construction equipment must also become emission-free as soon as possible. Various subsidies are available for this purpose.

Roadmap for electrification

The transition from fossil fuels to electricity is described in the electrification roadmap. The roadmap was drawn up by TKI Energy and Industry, DNV, TNO and various stakeholders. In addition to concrete targets and a step-by-step plan, the Roadmap also sets out how much extra electricity will be needed to enable industry and transport to switch to electricity and how this will be generated. The Road Map also calls for more innovation, upscaling and the reduction of risks and costs.

Electrification of industry

The electrification of industry is a major step towards reducing CO2 emissions. The industrial sector is responsible for more than 20 percent of total emissions in the Netherlands. Today, industry still largely runs on fossil fuels like oil, coal and natural gas. In order to speed up electrification, the government is working together with electricity companies, network managers and the industry. Electrification can be achieved both by converting existing fuel-powered machines to electrical ones and by purchasing new electrical equipment. In addition to electrification, efforts are being made to make industry more sustainable by using green hydrogen.

Electrification of cars

The electrification of cars is already in full swing. Partly due to technical progress and attractive subsidy schemes, the share of electric cars, company cars and trucks is growing rapidly. More and more petrol and diesel cars are being replaced when they reach the end of their useful lives. The electrification of the vehicle fleet is therefore a gradual process. You can also electrify your fleet by converting existing cars. However, this is relatively expensive and cumbersome.

Electrification of construction equipment

Electrification is a big issue in the construction industry. After all, the environmental regulations for the construction industry are becoming increasingly stringent. In order not to lose out on contracts and to contribute to achieving the climate targets, electrification of construction equipment such as cranes, excavators and concrete mixers is an excellent solution. This is possible for both new and existing machines. Changing your fleet from diesel to electric will reduce your costs and give you a competitive edge. For example, you do not have to deal with emission restrictions. Your employees will also enjoy working with electric machines: they will be less bothered by noise and fine dust. Intercel is happy to help you electrify your construction equipment.

What does Intercel do to drive electrification forward?

Intercel makes electrification possible by delivering customised batteries. In this way, we help your company make the transition from fossil to electric. Whether you want to electrify your industrial equipment or your construction machinery, Intercel can provide a tailor-made solution. Even machines that have to operate in extreme conditions can be converted to electric power. We distinguish ourselves by the way we design and build batteries. We work with cells instead of modules. Other suppliers can’t or don’t dare to customise a battery for a foundation machine like us.
